Breezy Otteson and Riley Powell were found dead – their alleged killer is now on trial
17-year-old Brelynne “Breezy” Otteson and her boyfriend Riley Powell were reported missing on January 2nd, 2018. They were found dead nearly three months later, thrown down in an abandoned mineshaft near their homes in Eureka, Utah. Their bodies had been beaten and stabbed. So what happened?
The alleged killer of Breezy and Riley is currently on trial for murder and kidnapping – charges that could bring the death penalty. The accused is Jerrod Baum, a man with swastika tattoos, and he appeared in court yesterday. Baum’s girlfriend, Morgan Henderson, tipped off the police that the bodies of Breezy and Riley were down the mineshaft.
She also told cops that Baum killed the teenagers after he caught her hanging out and smoking weed with them. Henderson recounted how Baum would not let her have “guy friends.”
Breezy and Riley
According to the Daily Mail, court documents indicate that Baum tied up Breezy and her boyfriend and drove them out to the site of an abandoned mine to kill them. There, he is said to have forced Breezy to watch while he stabbed Riley to death before slitting her throat. Baum then allegedly dumped both bodies down a mine shaft, where they were found three months later.

Baum apparently “felt bad” about killing Breezy, who wasn’t technically breaking his rules according to his girlfriend — so he tried to make her death “quick and painless.”
The families of both victims are –unsurprisingly — determined to go through with Baum’s trial, and don’t want the alleged murderer to take a plea deal, pushing for the death penalty instead. “There’s no settling for this. The kids need justice,” Amanda Hunt, Breezy’s aunt said to court reporters.
Breezy would have turned 18 on January 27 of this year, and Riley on April 28.
The trial continues.
